We discussed the genesis of HubStreet, which she describes as an online representation of the two-year-old MetroRoundTable networking organization targeted at complementary trusted advisors. Fox also remarked on the ways that legal professionals are using technology for business development, why social media is such a hot topic for lawyers and the best way to get started (including visits to law-related sites, such as JD Supra, Legally Minded and Legal OnRamp).

Estrin is also the editor of SUE magazine for women litigators and KNOW magazine for paralegals. We discussed the timing of the OLP's launch this fall, its partners (including DLA Piper's Browning Marean and Verizon's Patrick Oot), and the certification process, among other issues.

Law firms and clients are also trying to determine whether a new model of practicing law is emerging. She noted "on the bright side" that while the legal employment market has tightened, there are more opportunities for lawyers than ever before to do things outside of the traditional practice.

We discussed hiring trends and the market for legal talent. While he is observing a flattening of the employment market in law firms, and possibly a depression, following years of double-digit growth, he is seeing an upward demand for staff on the corporate side. Cowen highlights that the moment an organization makes the decision to insource, they realize they need the talent to drive that strategy and will likely get it from law firms and vendors. He views the corporate market as similar to the positioning of major law firms in 2003-2005, who were just establishing major e-discovery practices. As such, he has an optimistic view of the employment picture.

    I spoke with Jason Mark Anderman, President and co-founder of WhichDraft.com, a completely free automated contract assembly service, who advises members of the legal community that this is the greatest time to possibly start a business because there are a lot of services that you can offer in a down economy that save people money (e.g., drafting contracts for free). He notes that hopeful software architects need to take responsibility for determining what their product/service should look like themselves. Anderman suggests simply sitting down with a pencil and paper to sketch out the functionality, then scanning that image into a pdf and sending it directly to the developer. He discourages would-be entrepreneurs from taking a vague concept to a developer and hoping to cost-effectively bring the business to fruition.
