While in college he played football and studied exercise science and sports coaching at Western Maryland College. As a physical education and health teacher Joe taught grades 6-12 and coached football, basketball, track and field, and baseball. In 2010, Joe and his Wife Eliza moved to Hawaii and he began to pursue a career in strength and conditioning. Joe’s journey started as an intern with the University of Hawaii’s S&C department. After interning for two semesters Joe put his coaching ambitions on hold to raise his son Mason full-time.
