We're encouraged to be independent while at the same time we're told that putting the needs of the people we love above our own is the definition of love & noble sacrifice. Most of us make life decisions based not only on how they affect us personally, but how they affect the other people in our lives. Even if it doesn't seem like it, we choose how much we let other people's needs and wants influence our decision making and how much autonomy we claim for ourselves.
