Joey’s friend John Lotterhos comes on to discuss his marriage, divorce and how he feels the church could possibly rethink how they steer folks to hurry up and get married.  To make things a bit more interesting, Joey is the one who did John and his wife’s premarital counseling and wedding ceremony.  Lastly, John just started a podcast and it’s actually good enough to give you a little taste of it on air.

Morgan joins us to share her appreciation for Badchristian and Pastor With No Answers as a lesbian listener.  According to Morgan, this family of podcasts does well in keeping an open heart, admitting ignorance and approaching sensitive subjects with humility, something she says the church is unfortunately too often lacking.  As a result, folks like Morgan go through seasons in which they are unsure if they have a place in the body of Christ.

Derek Snook learned Christian values at an early age and was troubled by what he saw as a lack of true empathy among many who worked to alleviate poverty. By living with (that’s right, living with) and getting to know personally many homeless folks, he learned just how difficult it was for this population to land and keep good jobs.  He decided to start an organization to help fix this problem and wrote a book, The Definition of Success: What Living Homeless Taught Me, that tells of all these experiences.  Listen to Derek’s story and the stories of many folks’ struggle with homelessness.dereksnook.net

A friend of mine drops in to share the story of how she lost her 5-year old brother to a tragic accident when she was eight.  We discuss that tragic day and she reflects on her parents’ pain,  shares how she processed this loss as a young child, and shares insight on some healing words that she has yet to hear.

In this episode, we discuss Pricilla’s early heartache on how the church wrote off LGBTQ lifestyle as sin, while Joey was fine with a “because the bible tells us so (it’s wrong)” mentality. Hear about Pricilla’s uneasiness concerning Joey’s admonishing to “make sure her dad was saved” before he passed away and how Joey instructed her in 2000 to vote for Bush because Gore was a baby killer. Many of you know Chad as “the Tooth and Nail, Takehold, Come and Live” guy; now you can also know him as the author of the book, One Thousand Risks.  Chad and I are both Christians with extremely different upbringings which seem to have amounted to significantly different beliefs and approaches to miraculous healing.  We’ll just nickname this episode the “Iron Sharpens Iron Episode of Healing.”  Are some given a unique gift of faith in healing?  Is it okay not to pray for healing?  Is there a right way to pray or a right way to believe?  We discuss a little bit of everything healing on this one.

We’ve all experienced it.  Looking on the shelf at the grocery store, about to grab what you need when you see an organic option.  You also see the substantial extra cost, but is it worth paying the money for the organic version?  Or are we all being duped?

Joey invites a friend on who has a lot to say about the controversial topic of vaccines.  Is it possible that health has been improved to such a high degree through medicine, we now want to pick apart the means in which we’ve gotten to this improved state? Michael Overcash graduated from med school in 2002, specializes in dermatology and knows a lot about a lot.

Joey brings a personal friend on who a couple years ago found himself in a scary struggle with anger. At its peak, he obliterated a door. Does a “regular, nice guy" who struggles with anger have the capacity to hurt his family and land in jail? We’ll never know with Joel because he took the road of accountability and transparency, inviting a few close friends into his personal business with hopes of sparing him from future mistakes. So far, so good.

Jesse Smith shares details of his struggle with mental illness including manic and bipolar. Joey, a “fellow sufferer” of mental illness reflects on his struggles and not surprisingly the two find lots of common ground. The importance of proactivity in taking care of one’s mind, the phenomenon of not being able to relate to one’s mentally ill mind using one’s sound mind, suicidal thoughts, the importance of transparency, and the art of loving yourself are just a few of the topics discussed on this one.

Wanting to get “deeper into the spiritual things” may not signify spiritual maturity. Joey’s got some thoughts on and experience in this. Secondly, here’s last years Thanksgiving special featuring daughters and sons of Matt, Toby, and Joey. Oldie but a goodie.

As military personnel, Lieutenant Colonel Ted Jacobson has some interesting thoughts on “answering a call” from God that often leads to taking the life of a human.  WWJD, man?  We also talk conspiracies, “NFL kneeling,” whether the Revolutionary War was justified in the context of a Christian worldview, we discuss Isis, reflect on USA’s integrity (or lack of) in fighting wars, reflect on putting a comrad out of his/her misery and shudder at the dangers of North Korea.
