What is true forgiveness? Joseph teaches us in chapter 45 of Genesis what genuine forgiveness looks like. In an emotional interaction, Joseph reveals himself to his brothers and extends forgiveness that will ultimately restore his relationship with his family. Joseph is able to see the hand of God in every area of his life which becomes the key to being able to forgive like he did.

Jacob and his family in Canaan ran out of grain in the long famine and had to do what he did not want to do: send the beloved son Benjamin with the brothers back to Egypt. Joseph received them warmly and began to rebuild relationship with them.

Jacob learns of what happened with his sons in Egypt and the demand that they return there with his beloved son Benjamin. In response, Jacob despairs that everything is against him and felt there was little hope for his life.

Joseph sent his brothers back to Canaan with provisions and their grain money hidden in their sacks of grain. The unexpected gift was a test to the brothers. When the brothers discovered it, it made them more afraid of the mysterious Egyptian official.

As the foretold famine begins, Jacob sends his sons to Egypt to buy grain. Without knowing they meet Joseph, and Joseph begins a long process of restoring relationship with his brothers.

Although Joseph had a change in career he remained unchanged in character. He lives in Egypt but never becomes an Egyptian by remembering his Lord in both adversity and prosperity. He focuses on the future and makes peace with is past. He instills faith in his family, and through wise administration brings salvation to the nation of Egypt and the surrounding nations as well.

After being God’s messenger of knowledge to Pharaoh, now Joseph is God’s messenger of wisdom, advising Pharaoh to prepare for the great famine to come. Pharaoh then promoted Joseph to the second position in all Egypt to put the plan into action.

After two more years in prison, Joseph is brought to interpret Pharaoh's troubling dream. God used Joseph to bring His message to Pharaoh and all of Egypt.

Put in prison for a crime he never committed, Joseph brought God's message to the butler and baker of Pharaoh, revealing the meaning of their dreams.

Although Joseph is put in prison he demonstrates himself as a man of iron will determined to do the best with what God has given him. We're challenged in this text to embrace the place God has us in. To not just persevere in our circumstances but to excel in them.
