Hello! Hello! Welcome to Episode 13. Is handwriting a fundamental skill anymore? Do we still need it in a time when everything has a keyboard attached to it? The current common core strategies that are being taught in schools don’t even address cursive writing anymore because, like calligraphy, it’s not a necessary or efficient form of communication. In the first segment we examine writing, and compare cursive writing in particular to motorcycles, since they both started their rise and evolution at roughly the same time. Handwriting teaches the fundamental skills of letter formation and gives each letter a meaning, rather than just learning where it’s position is on the keyboard. Imagine what the ABCs would sound like if a person who has only typed sang them. It would be the QWEs instead. We think that rudimentary motorcycles, like handwriting, give beginning riders and mechanics alike a good starting place to learn the basic skills and relationships that technologically-laden bikes might not.
