  • Ep. 279: 'The Mummy' Animated Series on Peacock TV; Is It Worth Your Time?

    25/07/2020 Duração: 01h17min

Did you know The Mummy franchise had itself an animated series? We didn't either. The launch of Peacock TV brought that little nugget to our attention, so we decided to give it a watch to see how it holds up nearly 20 years later. You can watch both seasons of the series here for free, or you can watch this Season 1 sum-up "movie" The Mummy: Quest for the Lost Scrolls to get caught up on the adventure like we did. Then again, maybe you should just skip this entry in the Universal monster movie franchise altogether. You'll have to listen along with our latest podcast episode to see if the series is even worth your time. - Support the Show through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/saturdaymourningcartoons - Want to find our cohosts online? • Ep. 278: 'Basilisk: The Kouga Ninja Scrolls' Review | Saturday Mourning Cartoons

    18/07/2020 Duração: 01h05min

This week on Saturday Mourning Cartoons, we're fielding a long-standing Listener Request courtesy of Charles from Michigan. What's Charles want us to watch? Basilisk: The Kouga Ninja Scrolls, not to be confused with the follow-up anime Basilisk: The Ouka Ninja Scrolls or even the similarly titled but earlier gateway anime standout Ninja Scroll. You've got to keep your ninja clans and scrolls straight, people. In this 2005 Gonzo-animated adaptation of Fûtarô Yamada's iconic works, the heirs to the Kouga and Iga ninja clans -- Gennosuke and Oboro -- hope that the unsteady truce between their tribes would last. But much like the Romeo and Juliet story this tale takes inspiration from, fate denies the lovers and thrusts their people into war after centuries of peace. The terms are set on two scrolls: One, bearing a list of Kouga warriors, and another that holds a Iga fighters. The names found on these scrolls can only be crossed out in blood... but will Basilisk be worth watching once it's all said and done? Lis

  • 'Amphibia' Creator Matt Braly on Season 2 and Anne's Missing Shoe

    08/07/2020 Duração: 20min

Amphibia fans by and large want to know one thing above all: Will Anne Boonchuy ever find her missing shoe? I recently spoke with the show's creator and executive producer Matt Braly about that very fact, along with all things Amphibia ahead of the series' Season 2 premiere, Saturday, July 11th (8:20 p.m. EDT/PDT), on Disney Channel and DisneyNOW. We chatted about how fan reactions from Season 1 led to some interesting changes as Braly and his creative team shaped Season 2 and beyond; Season 3 of Amphibia has already been ordered, after all. We also talked about how the ongoing pandemic forced the team to stay flexible in order to bring more episodes to fans around the world as quickly as possible, all while maintaining the high standards we've come to know and love from Disney and Amphibia. Plus, while Season 2 will feature some absolutely incredible multi-part episodes that further explore the fantasy world, it'll also include some unexpected guest stars, like the one-and-only Kermit the Frog. All that a

  • Ep. 277: 'Solar Opposites' Review | Saturday Mourning Cartoons

    04/07/2020 Duração: 01h10min

Hulu's original animated series Solar Opposites has quickly become a hit for the streaming platform. From the creators behind Rick and Morty, this animated sitcom focuses on a family of aliens who crashland on Earth with the intention of terraforming it. But when they start to understand what makes humans special and unique, they might just learn to love the backward bipedal terrestrials. Probably not though. What'll probably happen is either the shrunken humans trapped in the Wall will revolt and find a way to take vengeance against their alien captor, or the Pupa will achieve its ultimate purpose and destroy the Earth as we know it. Maybe both will happen. Maybe neither. All we know is, we hope that Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan have an endgame in mind so that Solar Opposites doesn't try to milk its genuinely funny premise until the inevitable heat death of the universe. • Ep. 276: 'Sym-Bionic Titan' Review | Saturday Mourning Cartoons

    27/06/2020 Duração: 01h09min

You've probably heard of Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory, and if you're a Genndy Tartakovsky fan, you know all about Star Wars: Clone Wars, Primal and Hotel Transylvania, too. But there's a good chance you might have missed out on his 2010 animated Cartoon network series Sym-Bionic Titan. The 20-episodes, one-season series (which is streaming on Netflix now) follows three young alien beings -- Lance, Ilana, and Octus -- who have the ability to combine to form a giant robotic warrior. But when they're not battling giant kaiju, they must attempt to blend into suburbia, all while protecting their new adopted home from the same beings that threatened to destroy their home world. We gave this one a revisit 10 years later thanks to a listener recommendation (Thanks, Jesse!), but was it good enough to avoid The Dip? • 'Kipo' Showrunners on Season 3 and Portraying Gay Characters in Healthy Relationships

    20/06/2020 Duração: 17min

We love Netflix's DreamWorks Animation series Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. We sang its praises when it debuted this January, were happy to see that Season 2 continued to develop its colorful characters and make progressive strides forward in its story, and even talked about that more in our video review. Now, it's my pleasure to get a chance to talk to co-creators/showrunners Bill Wolkoff and Rad Sechrist once again to dig into all things Kipo a little more. Some spoilers follow. This time around, Wolkoff and Sechrist were able to talk about including an openly gay character in their animated series and how exactly that decision came about. The spotlight on healthy relationships of all kinds was further explored in Season 2, which they also comment on in our discussion. Plus, if you had questions about what separates a jaguar from a mega-jaguar, you're in the right place. So while Netflix has yet to officially order Season 3 of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, Wolkoff and Sechrist tease what might happ

  • Ep. 275: 'Kipo' Season 2 Review | Saturday Mourning Cartoons

    13/06/2020 Duração: 57min

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts should honestly be on the Top 10 TV Shows on Netflix every day, but especially this weekend. Season 2 of Radford Sechrist and Bill Wolkoff's excellent animated series from Dreamworks Animation just arrived on the streaming service yesterday with a batch of 10 all-new episodes. They continue the story of the title character and her bigger-than-life friends in a colorful, magical, and musical post-apocalyptic world. I already sang the praises of Kipo Season 2 in my written review for Collider, but we dig into it a little bit more in our latest video review here. Following the Season 1 finale, all is not well on the surface. With the burrow people under Scarlemagne’s mind control and her father his prisoner, Kipo must quickly learn to master her newly-discovered mute abilities in order to save them. As she and her friends split up on a dangerous rescue mission, Kipo’s journey of self-discovery unearths mysteries of the past that change everything she thought she knew. See how

  • Ep. 274: 'Ulysses 31' Review | Saturday Mourning Cartoons

    06/06/2020 Duração: 56min

We're going Greek -- Ancient Greek, that is -- in this week's nostalgic cartoon review with Ulysses 31. This early 80s animated series aims to retell Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey" set in the far-flung outer space of the 31st century. It's one part Saturday morning cartoon, one part classic literature, and 100% good, old-fashioned animated insanity. Shout-out to our longtime fan, friend, and regular contributor Bobby Anthem for recommending this one! Ulysses 31, a French-Japanese production that hails from DIC Audiovisuel and TMS Entertainment, sees the 31st century Ulysses and his crew attempting to find their way home to Earth after Zeus cursed them for destroying a gigantic robot cyclops. If that logline doesn't get you interested in this series, I don't know what will. But you'll have to tune in to see how this series holds up! - Support the Show through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/saturdaymourningcartoons - Want to find our cohosts online? • #SeisManos Actor Vic Chao on Voicing Chiu, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Ben 10 and More

    30/05/2020 Duração: 33min

We here on the Saturday Mourning Cartoons team are getting in on the Saturday-morning fun that the Powerhouse Animation cast and crew is having with Seis Manos. Their weekly watch parties go behind the scenes of the epic, action-packed, original animated Netflix series -- one of the best of 2019 -- to offer up trivia, bonus content, and all sorts of insider info from the actors, animators, and creative talent that brought the Mexicanime to life. One of the major players in the Seis Manos story is Vic Chao, who brings a remarkable performance, balanced between gentleness and strength, to the character and mentor figure Chiu. We had a chance to chat with Vic Chao ahead of this today's new watch party, which was pretty well-timed considering today's pair of episodes are rather important to Chiu's mythology. Chao spoke at length about his experiences on Seis Manos, including his audition for Castlevania that ultimately led to the role of Chiu. Additionally, Chao shared his reaction to his character's fate and co

  • #SeisManos Creators on How the Show Made Castlevania Possible

    30/05/2020 Duração: 50min

Later today, the Powerhouse Animation cast and crew will be holding another watch-party for their epic, action-packed Mexicanime series Seis Manos. The Saturday Mourning Cartoons team wanted to get in on the Saturday-morning fun, so not only will we be re-watching the Viz Media series on Netflix again (and again and again), we're also bringing you a bit of bonus coverage for it! The creative team behind the kung fu / grindhouse / Blaxploitation mash-up series will take to social media once again to offer episode commentary to fans as they watch, along with never-before-seen content from behind the scenes, intriguing trivia, and more on the show's mythology and lore. And we were lucky enough to sit down with co-creators Brad Graeber and Alvaro Rodriguez, and co-executive producer / writer Daniel Dominguez to get even more insight on Seis Manos. To our surprise, the team revealed that it was Powerhouse's early creation of a fight-focused sizzle reel for Seis Manos that helped them seal the deal to be the an

  • Rob Paulsen on the #Animaniacs Reboot and Surviving Cancer

    23/05/2020 Duração: 01h04min

There's a good chance you'll know Rob Paulsen's voice when you hear it. Be it Raphael in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series or Donatello in the 2012 version, the iconic Warner Bros. mascot Yakko Warner from Animaniacs or the hit character Pinky from the super successful spin-off series Pinky and the Brain, Carl Wheezer from Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, or one of any of his nearly 1,300 roles, Paulsen has been honing his voice-acting craft for 40 years and continues to go strong today. His iconic characters from Animaniacs are due for another go-round this fall with Steven Spielberg's reboot of the series on Hulu, but Paulsen has plenty of other reasons to celebrate. I had a chance to chat with Paulsen as part of our ongoing Saturday Mourning Cartoons interview series. We talked about the upcoming new series and what it was like to reunite with the returning cast and crew, along with newcomers to the title, plus the musical roadshow Animaniacs in Concert. We also chatted about his battle with thro

  • 'She-Ra' Season 5 Spoilers Discussion with Noelle Stevenson

    16/05/2020 Duração: 12min

If you haven't caught up with the latest (and final) season of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power on Netflix, you might want to do so before listening to our latest chat with showrunner Noelle Stevenson. We recently brought you a Season 5 interview with Stevenson to tease the adventures of Adora & co. in this final batch of episodes, along with high praise for star Keston John as the many voices of The Horde. But now, in our continuing series of interviews through our animation-focused podcast Saturday Mourning Cartoons, we chat with Stevenson one last time to break down spoilers from the excellent and emotionally satisfying Season 5. In this all-too-brief conversation, Stevenson talked about the very special tattoo that she and members of the crew got as a memento of their time on the show and what it means within the lore of She-Ra. We also discussed the many complicated relationships between the characters, be they parent-child dynamics, teacher-student pairings, or romantic entanglements. There's a

  • 'She-Ra' Showrunner Noelle Stevenson on Season 5, Adora, and The Horde

    15/05/2020 Duração: 16min

With the fifth and final season of 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power' now on Netflix, we had a chance to chat with showrunner Noelle Stevenson about the all-new adventures streaming today. Stevenson talked about the show's production process and whether or not it was affected at all by the ongoing global pandemic. Regarding the show itself, we talked about Adora's arc this season and in the series overall. Stevenson teased the ultimate resolution of Adora's story, the epic conclusion of the series, and praised the fantastic voice performances of Keston John as the many faces of The Horde. • 'The Shivering Truth' Season 2 Interview with Cat Solen

    09/05/2020 Duração: 34min

Adult Swim's haunting yet thought-provoking stop-motion series 'The Shivering Truth' returns for Season 2. To celebrate that fact, we had a chance to chat with director/executive producer Cat Solen in a unique interview experience. We stepped into the simulated world of Second Life to carry out the interview in a uniquely designed venue tailormade for the series itself. Be sure to check out the video! During this interview, Solen talked about creator Vernon Chatman's creative process and how they work together to bring his ideas to the screen, the particular challenges and creative rewards posed by stop-motion animation, the incredible work of their entire team from concept to execution, and just which effects sequences were the hardest to pull off. Plus, Solen shares her thoughts on Season 2 and what she wants audiences to get out of the experience. - Support the Show through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/saturdaymourningcartoons - Want to find our cohosts online? • Ep. 272: 'Salty's Lighthouse' Review | Saturday Mourning Cartoons

    02/05/2020 Duração: 01h12min

Another week, another Listener Suggestion. Our cartoon lawyers are FURIOUS! This week's suggestion comes courtesy of Kevin, who wanted us to watch and review 'Salty's Lighthouse', a kids show from the late 1990s that took a bunch of footage from 'Tugs' and added it into its own animated nightmare. The series briefly ran on TLC as part of the network's "Ready Set Learn" programming block. But did we learn anything from reviewing this show, or did we simply run as far away as possible? • Ep. 271: 'MEGAS XLR' Review | Saturday Mourning Cartoons

    25/04/2020 Duração: 01h42s

We're revisiting 'MEGAS XLR', an early 2000s animated mecha series created by Jody Schaeffer and George Krstic. The action-packed animation on this comedy show that takes aim at all kinds of anime trope came courtesy of Cartoon Network Studios, Titmouse animation, and Sunmin Image Pictures. And why are we doing this to ourselves? Well, one, because it's actually a really funny and well-done series, but also because a listener called in to recommend it; our cartoon lawyers say we're legally obligated to cover it. • 'The Last Kids on Earth' Season 2 with Max Brallier and Scott Peterson

    17/04/2020 Duração: 22min

From New York Times bestselling author Max Brallier and showrunner Scott Peterson of Atomic Cartoons comes the fun and lighthearted animated series, The Last Kids on Earth. The Netflix hit follows Jack Sullivan (Nick Wolfhard) and a band of suburban middle schoolers living in a decked-out tree house, playing video games, gorging themselves on candy and battling zombies. 10 all-new episodes arrived on Netflix today; be sure to add it to your watchlist now! In honor of the new season's arrival, I had a chance to chat with Brallier and Peterson as part of our continuing Saturday Mourning Cartoons interview series, like our related chat with Wolfhard himself. I checked in with the EPs after our previous chat, which came before the launch of The Last Kids on Earth. We talked about how the creative team is dealing with the current quarantine situation and whether or not that affected their writing process for the post-apocalyptic series. Brallier and Peterson also talked about how much the cast of characters has

  • Nick Wolfhard on 'The Last Kids on Earth' Season 2 and 'Smiling Friends' with Brother Finn

    17/04/2020 Duração: 21min

Based on the New York Times bestselling book series by Max Brailler, the fun and lighthearted series 'The Last Kids on Earth' follows Jack Sullivan (Nick Wolfhard) and a band of suburban middle-schoolers living in a decked-out tree house, playing video games, gorging themselves on candy and battling zombies. All-new episodes of the action-packed Atomic Cartoons adaptation, from showrunner Scott Peterson, are now streaming on Netflix. I had a chance to chat with Wolfhard about Season 2 (or Season 1: Part B as it's displayed on Netflix itself) as part of our continuing interview series for Saturday Mourning Cartoons. We talked about the challenges of living in self-isolation and social distancing in the real world while playing a character trying to survive the apocalypse in the fictional one. Wolfhard also shared his thoughts on Jack's growth this season, his questionable taste in food, and all the challenges awaiting Jack and his friends throughout these new episodes. Plus, he gave us a behind-the-scenes acc

  • Ep. 270: 'Here Come the Littles' / 'The Littles' Review

    11/04/2020 Duração: 01h11min

On this episode of Saturday Mourning Cartoons, we're busy trying to figure out what's been scratching inside our walls for the last few weeks. Turns out, it's a civilization of miniature mouse-like people called The Littles. They totally built a full-on city on our apartment's foundation, complete with tiny furniture, vehicles, and houses of their own. It'd be delightful if it didn't make us question our sanity. So big thanks to Benjamin Schyan for the listener suggestion this week since it staved off our cabin fever for just a little bit longer. The 80s animated series The Littles also boasted a feature-length animated film titled Here Come the Littles. We watched both the movie and the series premiere for this episode, because we're gluttons for punishment we wanted to give Ben the best bang for his buck. It ended up being one of the silliest episodes we've ever made, so we hope you enjoy! - Support the Show through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/saturdaymourningcartoons - Want to find our cohosts o
