"If you don’t forgive others, I won’t forgive you.” “It’s going to be easier for those cities than it will be for you on the day of judgement.” “Depart from me I never knew you.” “Anyone who talks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven.” Jesus’ words sound so judgmental, unloving, unforgiving, and quite frankly, full of anger. And he sounds like this a lot. It’s a bit bothersome and seems conflictive with his actions of love and surrender. Talking to Brian McLaren about this months ago was so helpful to me personally, I had to rehash with some microphones so you can benefit as well. There’s so much going on culturally with Jesus’ words and so many interpretive factors people typically are unaware of. Michael Wiseman has a podcast that puts Christians (more specifically, Pastors) on the hot-seat by throwing their beliefs on “the grill” of atheism. As always, he has some very good points to ponder. I enjoyed getting grilled although it may not bid well for my intellectual reputation. One of the topics addressed was the seemingly “mean-spirited, short-fused, threatening” side of Jesus we encounter through some of his harsh words read in the gospels.
