Paul greets various people in Romans 16. What characterises them?

John writes to ensure that his readers are firm on the gospel and living consistently with it.

Who is the church in today's world?

Jesus' teaching on marriage and divorce is clear, but in practice in a fallen world complicated situations arise. Paul gives some guidance.

Unlike Moses, Jesus does not permit easy divorce.

Paul had not gone to Rome (where there was already a church) because his ambition was to preach the gospel where it had not been heard.

The New Testament adds a whole new insight into marriage as mirroring the relationship between Christ and the church.

We need to accept one another, and speak as one, so that God is glorified.

Under the old testament law, it was permitted for a man to divorce (called 'sending away') a wife who did not please him.

Some issues are unimportant and on such things it is best to display tolerance for the sake of building up, rather than offending, a brother or sister in Christ. But we should be convinced in our own minds and give thanks to God.
