  • Accept You're Accepted: Valerie Chaney (We Made It Weird!) on Mindfulness, Mean Girls, Writing & More (Part 2 of 2) ☕️

    07/04/2022 Duração: 58min

Back for the first time in 7 years is my good friend Valerie Chaney. Val is a meditation and mindfulness educator, writer and the co-host of the We Made It Weird podcast with her husband, comedian Pete Holmes. Val is hilarious, gentle, wise, incredibly smart and one of my favorite people. It was no surprise when we talked for over three hours, so I’m splitting up this episode into two parts.Val trained with Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield, who both have informed her work within healing trauma, mindfulness, meditation, and embodiment, which we spoke about at length in part 1 last week. This second half of our conversation is a bit sillier! We talk more about therapy, what we were like as teens, mean girls, finding your hobbies and creative process, as well as the rom coms and style trends we love from the early 2000s.In addition to her mindfulness work, Val is one of the most talented and creative people I know: she teaches dance, sings in a choir and, most recently, wrote a screenplay, which she discussed at th

  • Like No Time Has Passed with Rosie Acosta

    25/03/2022 Duração: 01h11min

Today’s conversation is with author and mindfulness teacher Rosie Acosta. Growing up in East LA in the 90s as a first-generation Mexican-American, Rosie suffered from agoraphobia, panic attacks, and anxiety. After being arrested a few times, at 16, she began to feel disillusioned with her family’s unwavering Catholic faith and soon after discovered meditation and yoga, eventually leading her to her career as a yoga and meditation teacher. Since then, she’s been featured in Yoga Journal, Forbes, The New York Post and more. Rosie and I met over five years ago when she visited Detroit with Yoga Journal Magazine. Recently, we spent a morning catching up, first in an episode of her weekly podcast, then in this conversation, where we cover navigating cycles in relationships, disillusionment and faith, and her new book and the process of writing it. Show notes:- Listen to my episode on Rosie's podcast on Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Youtube- Follow Rosie on Instagram- There is one spot open in my creative clinic -- if

  • The 1 a.m. Conversation: New York Times Columnist Kyle Buchanan on Writing, Togetherness, Mad Max & More

    18/03/2022 Duração: 56min

This week I spoke to New York Times journalist and author of Blood, Sweat & Chrome, Kyle Buchanan. He reports on pop culture and writes the NYT awards season column, The Projectionist, which he took over from the late great journalist David Carr. Prior to joining The Times in 2018, Kyle was a senior editor at Vulture, where he covered the movie industry. Appropriately, he gives advice on writing and we talk about the craft of interviewing, creating safety in conversation, connection, movies, returning to theaters, and the upcoming Oscars. And of course, we talk about his new book on Mad Max and the process of writing an oral history. Since the episode is shorter than some, I tee it up with a helpful piece of advice from Kyle's predecessor, David Carr. I loved this conversation about connection, pop culture, writing, and collaboration. Show notes:- Check out The Projectionist and follow @kylethomasbuchanan- Order Blood, Sweat, and Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road- Terry Gross interview

  • Why Do Women Fear Bitcoin? Isabel Foxen Duke Teaches Me About the Economic Justice Properties of Decentralized Currency (85% of Bitcoin Traders Are Men)

    21/01/2022 Duração: 01h28min

Today’s guest has been a friend for nearly a decade and a guest several times. In a departure from the wide-ranging conversations we usually have here, today we focus on about a topic she's recently been exploring. There’s no better person at explaining concepts to me than my friend Isabel Foxen Duke. You might know her as as a leading expert in the body positivity and body neutrality space. Her work has been seminal in my eating disorder recovery, and she was my introduction into areas including fat politics, intuitive eating, and health at every size. When she told me she was learning about cryptocurrency, I was all ears despite finance and tech being intimidating subjects to me. According to Bloomberg, 85% of Bitcoin owners are men, so I wanted to have a woman on to talk about it. Isabel's patience in explaining esoteric concepts gave me a baseline understanding and sparked a curiosity to learn more. We used my beginner's mind to record a non-intimidating introductory discussion, specifically about the eco

  • Brightness Crumb with Grace Park & Jesse Dalton of The Deer

    03/12/2021 Duração: 01h27min

This week I spoke with Grace Park and Jesse Dalton, two members of the Austin-based band The Deer. If you listened to my recent episode with Buck Meek (of Big Thief), he recommended his fellow Texan musicians The Deer to be featured on the podcast, and I'm so glad he did. Their songs are spacious, with airy vocals and gentle percussion, and it’s a sound that compels comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, Neko Case or Mazzy Star. In this conversation, Jesse and Grace tell me about the beginning of the band, being back on the road after quarantine, their new album, and their process. • [Updated Repost] Julia Turshen Part 1 - food, effortlessness, connection, control, writing, etc.

    24/11/2021 Duração: 01h07s

This one isn’t from that deep into the archive,  it was one of my favorites of the year. You’ll hear more about it in the original intro but we split it into two parts and you’re about to hear part one of my two part conversation with chef and writer Julia Turshen. I thought would be timely for this week which is the start of the holiday season because. It’s a week where a lot of us will be gathering and there’s a lot of talk about food and eating and this episode gets into that. Julia has coauthored numerous cookbooks and has written for TheNew York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Vogue, Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Saveur, and more.  The New York Times has described her “at the forefront of the new generation of authentic, approachable authors.” Julia not only loves cooking and writing about food, she also loves talking about it and hosts her own podcast, Keep Calm and Cook On. She’s genuine, talented, and kind. I loved this conversation with her that spanned a wide range of topics, in
