  • Collapsing Timelines with Holisticism's Michelle & Wallis

    01/04/2023 Duração: 01h36min

This week I spoke with Michelle and Wallis, hosts of The Twelfth House and Good For U(?) podcasts. They had me on a few months ago and we had such a great conversation that I asked if we could talk more on this one. Michelle and I have been friends for ages, she’s the founder of Holisticism. Wallis joined the team a few years ago, and she, like Michelle, is so smart and cool as you’ll hear. We talk about the beginning days of Holisticism, a space that bridges the gap between the mystic and the realistic to make well-being more accessible to more people. We covered how it has expanded, including how they’ve built their team, advice for management, hiring, non-coercive marketing, failure, curation vs creation, prioritization as “squiggly brained" people, and podcasting as a medium (they both used the Podcast Kit to start their shows). And then we get into regret, string theory, breakups, collapsing timelines, undefined friendships, and much more. Let us know if you listen. Show Notes:- The Podcast Kit that we t

  • What You Run From Chases You with Danielle LaPorte

    18/03/2023 Duração: 01h21min

Danielle LaPorte is an author and poet living in Vancouver, Canada. I’ve been reading her books for years and this is her second time on the podcast. She has a way of articulating esoteric concepts in a way that goes down real easy for me, always has. We spoke over zoom a few weeks ago about what she’s been learning lately, self-help exhaustion, how non-duality is a creative act, self forgiveness vs self discipline, having the courage to make what she calls the 11th hour change, and how I discovered her in 2013 and her memory of that day. She quotes Krishnamurti saying “discipline is a tool that numbs the mind,” so we talked about that, our tendency to take on too many projects so we have to stay up late and eat crackers for dinner. We get into her thoughts on what she calls “tyrant time" vs "power time” and  more. Her new book is called How to Be Loving, and I especially love her early book The Desire Map. Let us know if you listen.Show Notes:- Find Danielle on the Web | Instagram- Find me: @letitouttt or I'

  • Cale remembers his thoughts: musician Cale Tyson on rehab, recovery & our neighborhood feeling like high school...

    10/03/2023 Duração: 01h16min

Cale Tyson is a musician originally from Texas, now living in my neighborhood in LA. He came by several weeks ago and we talked about our neighborhood feeling like high school, what he was like in high school, self-mythologizing, craving validation in projects (and beyond), and being allergic to earnestness…all before getting into his wild story of how he ended up going to rehab and getting sober last summer. He honestly explains what got him to that point with his trademark combo of self-deprecation and earnest humor. His new book, "Some Memories Are Only Thoughts”, just came out. We talk about that too as well as writing, sharing our work, and cringing at the process of it all. He’s a real gentle, sweet guy who makes me laugh and surprised me with a bunch of wisdom in this. And I surprised him with a few questions from his friends. Let us know if you listen.Show Notes:- Find Cale on the Web | Instagram | Spotify- Photos of Cale by our friend  Jacob Boll -Find me: @letitouttt  or  I'm @katiedalebout- Cale's

  • The Big Bad Thing: Ryann Bosetti Returns (Part 3/3)

    08/03/2023 Duração: 01h16min

This week is the third and final part of my conversation with hair stylist Ryann Bosetti. If you listened to the last two episodes you know she’s one of my favorite people to talk to so I wasn’t surprised we recorded for over three hours. I broke up that conversation into the last two episodes, where we talked about everything from how she got scouted to model at age 19 to her mystical thoughts on finding love in her late thirties to how she looks at her life through the lens of a fairy tale. If we look at her life from that storybook perspective, then this third episode is the chapter about a big, bad, wild situation that happened to her a few years ago. Recorded on a separate day, in this part Ryann shares the bad thing that happened to her, what she learned from that terrible time, how she healed from the tender spot she was left in, and how she now helps others as a result of her experience. Show Notes:- Listen to part 1 and part 2 of my conversation with Ryann-No sponsor this week--instead please conside

  • Mythic Beauty: Legendary Hairtylist Ryann Bosetti (Part 2/3)

    24/02/2023 Duração: 01h45min

This week is part two of my conversation with hair stylist Ryann Bosetti. So happy she’s back since she’s one of my favorite people to talk to. We recorded for three hours at her studio a few weeks ago. Ryann is incredibly wise, special, mystical, and has sage insight around so many topics, so I’ve broken this up into a few episodes. In this second part, we cover: how she got scouted to model at age 19; how she found hairdressing; hair trends like big hair in the 80s; frequently asked questions about hair trends, health, and growth. Last week in part one, we talked about: power dynamics in the hair world; her mystical thoughts on finding love; on becoming what she calls a “baby elder woman” and how she loves sharing what she’s learned.Show Notes:- Listen to part 1 of my conversation with Ryann from last week- **My one-on-one CREATIVE CLINIC is open with a few spots left! 18/02/2023 Duração: 01h03min

This week I speak with hair stylist Ryann Bosetti. She’s one of my favorite people to talk to, so we recorded for three hours at her studio a few weeks ago. Ryann has lived many fascinating lives. She is incredibly wise, special, mystical, and has sage insight around so many topics, so I’m breaking this up into a few episodes. In this first part, we talk about: power dynamics in the hair world; her mystical thoughts on finding love; on becoming what she calls a “baby elder woman” and how she loves sharing what she’s learned. Next week in part two we cover: how she got scouted to model at age 19; how she found hairdressing; hair trends like big hair in the 80s; frequently asked questions about hair trends, health, and growth. Topics:-softening within work-healing from hair shame-power dynamics in the hair world-importance of communication between hair stylist and client-positive lessons she got from her years of being a model-single women in society: the term “chronically single”-opening up to dating after bei

  • So What Do You Do? with Mary Jelkovsky on Evolving Ambition, Body Image, Niches & Creative Output

    11/02/2023 Duração: 01h45min

This week I spoke with author Mary Jelkovsky. Mary asked me on her podcast a couple months ago and when we recorded that interview we recorded one for Let It Out too. In the first half of this episode, Mary and I talk about how our difference in age impacts how we each use social media and technology, including how at only 16 she became an influencer as a fitness model, which led her to disordered eating, into recovery, and eventually to the work she’s doing now to help women accept their bodies and let go of food and body obsession. She’s written a best-selling book and accompanying journal, and over the past 5 years, she's been featured in TEDx, Teen Vogue, Shape, and Health Magazine. She also hosts the podcast Mary’s Cup of Tea, and the second half of this episode is part of my interview as a guest there. We talk about how orthorexia led me to create a blog that became a podcast about wellness, and how I eventually transitioned it beyond that niche to what it is now. We also cover the mindset (and fears) of

  • Anjie Cho Moves My Furniture & Makes It All Better

    03/02/2023 Duração: 01h45min

In lieu of an interview, this episode is a recording of a session I had with interior designer, architect, author, and feng shui consultant, Anjie Cho. Recorded in person at my apartment, Anjie gives me a typical feng shui and design consultation as if I were a new client.Sessions always start with the question: what are your three wishes for your life? The wishes become a jumping-off point to find interior adjustments in the nine different home areas, which in my case were mostly related to increasing my assertiveness, connection, defined relationships, and creativity. You’ll hear what a session is like as well get some general interior insights from her you can use, but most of all you’ll hear a loose (too?) personal conversation between two old friends. Through answering her consult questions, I end up telling her everything that’s up in the air in my little weird life from dating to money…which I almost cut out but left it all in and hope at least one of you finds it entertaining. But mostly for context fo

    01/01/2023 Duração: 02h10min

For the first episode of the new year, my editor and dear friend Briana Bane joins me to answer listener questions. The questions covered everything from astrology, gift giving and receiving, and advice we’d give our 25- and 35-year-old selves to our most midwestern qualities, how we both ended up moving from NYC to LA, and more. Then I have a conversation with Sprout Living founder Mark Malinsky covering the best advice he's ever been given, parenting and working from home, and even Martha Stewart’s Las Vegas restaurant. • Listen to This: Talk Easy

    21/12/2022 Duração: 17min

I’m sharing a special preview of a podcast I’ve been loving for years, Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso, from Pushkin Industries. Talk Easy is a weekly interview podcast, where writer Sam Fragoso invites actors, writers, activists, and musicians to come to the table and speak from the heart in ways you probably haven't heard from them before. Driven by curiosity, he’s had revealing conversations with everyone from Ethan Hawke to Cate Blanchett to Pedro Pascal to Questlove. In this preview, he sits down with actor, writer, and director Lake Bell, who shares her path to creating Inside Voice, her new audiobook. She describes growing up in Manhattan in the 80s, chronicling the world around her by tape recorder, and capturing those experiences into her 2013 film, "In a World..." And she shares how her voice has transformed in the past decade, the phenomenon of the 'sexy baby voice,' and the characters she hopes to discover in years to come. • We're Spiraling: Money Shame, Comparison, Marriage, Kids & Different Timelines

    09/12/2022 Duração: 02h18min

Instead of an interview today is a mashup of two episodes of Spiraling, the podcast I co-host with Serena Wolf about mental health. We started in 2019 where I’d walk to her apartment once a week and we’d talk and eventually started recording our conversations around anxiety. It’s been 4 years and now we live on opposite coasts, but we still record our conversations. The first half is from the middle of the current season, where we discuss navigating different timelines and expectations both from ourselves and from society. I picked this episode because I got messages from people saying it was comforting to hear where I am with being a single person navigating a freelance career so, even though it makes me cringe a little, I’m sharing it here too. The format of Spiraling is that Serena and I both share our “spirals” for the week, try to help each other talk through them, then discuss a topic: the one you’re about to hear is on comparison, money, the decision to have kids, and aging. All of this sounds real hea

  • Anna Fusco on Meeting Lord Cowboy, Community, Taking the Pressure Off & Much More

    25/11/2022 Duração: 01h20min

This week on the program is artist Anna Fusco, who you might know as Lord Cowboy. Anna works across drawing, writing, and digital illustration. She’s done some big drawings, has a really cool poster and print shop, and writes a reader-supported newsletter called "Unsupervised" that is read by thousands of people each month, including me. She currently lives on the central coast of California and we caught up over zoom a few weeks ago. We discussed everything from over-processing experiences, care vs. worry, the accountability that comes from living in community, to how she met “Lord Cowboy” and ended up living where she is now.   Anna and I connected after my friend Christine sent me one of her posters. It is one that I especially loved because it articulated something we all crave in some degree: connection and community. I’m far from the only person who resonated with the poster and in this Anna shared where she was when she wrote the words. Anna is so special and I loved speaking with her as much as I love

  • Charm Attack with Leona Naess

    05/11/2022 Duração: 01h15min

This week I spoke with singer-songwriter Leona Naess who recently released an album titled Brood X after a family of periodic cicadas that, like her, reemerged in 2022 after 17 years underground. In the years since she released her last album in 2004, Naess had lived her own life “underground”— nesting, becoming a mom, and moving through the grief of losing both parents. Released in 2021, Brood X has themes of reemergence and rediscovery. In this conversation we talk about how she got into the music industry young with her hit song Charm Attack, the music industry in the 90s, processing grief, being cool vs. warm, and more. Show notes:-It's not to late to join IN PROCESS -- find out more and sign up here!-Find Leona on the Web | Instagram-Read this Harper's Bazaar article on Leona-Subscribe to our newsletter to get show notes + essays, etc. sent to your inbox-Follow @letitouttt on Instagram. I'm @katiedalebout If you liked this episode, try out:Episode 404: Musician Courtney Marie Andrews on Chunk Writing &am

  • Bad Thoughts with Nada Alic (Part 2 of 2)

    21/10/2022 Duração: 50min

This week I spoke to writer Nada Alic. She’s the author of Bad Thoughts and working on a forthcoming novel. We recorded in the height of a heatwave here in LA. I came over in the morning, left in the late afternoon. We hung out for an hour or two then recorded for nearly three more. I found listening to her comforting, so I’m breaking it into two parts. As you'll hear, she's incredibly intelligent and clearly creative, yet humble and so funny. She's one of those rare people who are as cool as they seem online, yet also so warm, inviting, and genuinely kind. In this second part, we take questions from some mutual friends, and she talks about her somewhat secret 3:00 ritual, her thoughts on comparisons to other artists, romantic relationships, meeting her husband, friendship, novel research wormholes, and more. In part one last week, we covered everything from our first communions and lingering Catholic guilt to shadow integration, how she ended up in LA, disembodiment, body image, and cancel culture. Following that success, she’s gone on to host and executive produce, write books, and create a podcast. Last year, Stacy founded State of Menopause, a holistic line addressing the symptoms associated with menopause. And while it might seem like a twist, she’s doing what she has done her entire career as a stylist: helping people who are struggling feel better. She’s honestly so cool—we explored the connection between style, eating disorder recovery, and negative body image and also talked about career transitions. Instead of the usual interview, this is a casual conversation I have with writer Maggie Harrison and Brian Stoothoff, co-founder and owner of the Brooklyn coffee shop Daughter. They each introduce themselves and explain how we met, cover creative process (including how crucial focus is to creativity), loving and leaving where you grew up, seasons and lacking them, and more. They are both founding members of the workshop I started in the fall of 2020--then called Creative Underdogs. It’s a place that encourages connection while making projects. They talk about what happened to them as a result of the group and I tell why I stopped hosting it so abruptly. For the three of us talking about foods we’ve eaten lately morphs into a deep dive into the minutiae of our palates and flavor preferences—from our love of smoked flavor to oatmeal.
